UltraClear is one of the most talked-about laser resurfacing treatments in London right now, and for good reason. It delivers the kind of results historically only achievable with CO2 lasers, without the two-week recovery or the skin tone restrictions. But if you're considering booking, the questions that matter most aren't about the technology, they're practical. How long will I look red? When will I see results? How many sessions do I actually need?
This is a clinical, no-fluff guide to what UltraClear actually looks and feels like, from the first session through to long-term results, based on what we see day-to-day at our London clinic.
What Is UltraClear, in Plain English?
UltraClear is a cold fibre laser that resurfaces the skin while stimulating deep collagen regeneration. It works by delivering controlled micro-pulses of energy that remove damaged surface cells and trigger remodelling beneath the skin. The result is improved tone, texture, firmness and clarity.
The reason it stands out: it achieves CO2-level results with significantly less downtime, and it's safe for all skin types, including darker tones that have historically been excluded from ablative laser treatments.
There are four treatment levels, ranging from superficial resurfacing for glow and pigmentation through to deep dermal regeneration for advanced scarring and laxity. The level you need depends entirely on your skin concerns and is confirmed at consultation.
What to Expect Before Your First UltraClear Session
Preparation starts roughly two weeks before treatment.
You'll be asked to stop active skincare ingredients including retinol, AHAs, BHAs and vitamin C in the week leading up to the session. Daily SPF 50 becomes non-negotiable, and recent sun exposure or tanning will usually mean rescheduling. If you're prone to cold sores, your practitioner may prescribe antiviral medication as a precaution.
Your consultation will confirm your treatment level, discuss expected downtime based on your specific protocol, and walk you through aftercare. This is also when pricing is finalised. Level 1 starts from £495, Level 2 from £795, Level 3 from £1,495 and Level 4 from £2,250, with the final figure depending on area, intensity and sessions.
What Happens During the Treatment
The session itself takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the area treated and the level chosen.
You'll arrive at the clinic, have a numbing cream applied for 30 to 45 minutes, then the treatment itself usually takes 15 to 25 minutes of active laser time. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of warm, prickling pulses. It's manageable, particularly with the numbing cream, and many people compare it to a strong elastic band sensation rather than significant pain.
Immediately after, your skin will feel hot, similar to a sunburn, and look red and swollen. This is normal and expected. You'll receive a soothing post-treatment protocol before you leave, plus access to a complimentary 15-minute LED therapy session to support healing.
UltraClear Recovery, Day by Day
This is where most patients want the real detail. Downtime varies by treatment level, but here's what typically happens.
Day 1 Skin feels hot, tight and looks visibly red and swollen, similar to a moderate to severe sunburn. Most patients head straight home and avoid social plans. Cold compresses and the prescribed aftercare keep things comfortable.
Day 2 Redness and swelling are usually at their peak. The skin may feel rough, like fine sandpaper. Makeup is not yet recommended. Many patients work from home on this day.
Day 3 to 4 Swelling begins to subside. The skin develops a bronzed, slightly tight appearance and may start to flake gently. This is the collagen remodelling phase kicking in. Light, mineral-based makeup can usually be reintroduced.
Day 5 to 7 Most of the visible flaking is complete. Skin tone starts to even out, and the first signs of improved clarity and brightness become noticeable. Most patients are confidently back to normal life by this point.
Week 2 The pinkness fades and the new skin reveals itself. Texture is smoother, pigmentation looks lighter, and the skin has a noticeable glow.
Level 1 typically resolves within 3 to 5 days. Level 2 takes 4 to 6 days. Level 3 takes 5 to 7 days. Level 4 is fully bespoke and downtime is confirmed in consultation.
When Will You See Results?
Results from UltraClear come in two waves.
The first wave is visible within 1 to 2 weeks. Once the redness and flaking settle, the skin looks clearer, brighter and smoother. Pigmentation appears lighter, tone is more even, and texture is visibly refined. This is the surface renewal phase.
The second wave unfolds over 3 to 6 months. Collagen and elastin production continues long after the session, gradually firming and remodelling the skin from within. This is when deeper concerns like acne scarring, fine lines and laxity show their most significant improvement.
For a full course of treatments, expect the most dramatic transformation around the 6-month mark after your final session. This is when the cumulative effect of both surface renewal and deep collagen remodelling reaches its peak.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
It depends on the level and your concerns.
Level 1 and Level 2 typically require 2 to 3 sessions to achieve optimal results. Patients treating pigmentation, dullness, early ageing and uneven tone usually fall into this bracket.
Level 3 often delivers strong results in just 1 to 2 sessions due to its depth. This is the level most often used for moderate to deeper acne scarring, collagen loss and lines.
Level 4 is fully bespoke. Most patients require 1 to 2 sessions, with the protocol designed around the severity of scarring, laxity or volume loss.
Sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. This timing allows the skin to heal fully and gives collagen time to remodel before the next stimulus.
Aftercare and Long-Term Results
The first week of aftercare is critical. Strict SPF 50 daily, no active skincare ingredients for at least two weeks, no sun exposure, no saunas, no heavy exercise for 48 to 72 hours, and gentle cleansing only. Your practitioner will give you a tailored regimen.
To extend and protect your results long-term, most clients at our London clinic combine UltraClear with maintenance treatments such as polynucleotides, the Injectual Polynucleotide Cocktail or PRX-T33. Annual UltraClear top-ups, usually one session every 12 to 18 months, help maintain collagen levels and keep results looking fresh.
A consistent skincare routine with retinoids (reintroduced after the recovery window), antioxidants and daily SPF is essential. Without these, results fade faster.
Is UltraClear Worth It?
For the right candidate, yes. UltraClear genuinely delivers on the promise of CO2-level results without CO2-level recovery. It's particularly valuable for patients with darker skin tones who have previously been told ablative resurfacing isn't safe for them, and for anyone managing visible acne scarring, pigmentation or signs of ageing without the option to take two weeks off work.
It is not a quick fix. It is a clinical commitment, and the best results come from doing the full protocol, following aftercare seriously, and building it into a broader skin plan with maintenance support.
